Just for the record, though it is probably gaining favor since “conversate” has been declared a word — ugh! — the word should be “preventive.”

…We took preventive measures to correct the situation.

  1. If a witness says the incorrect word, is a reporter and/or scopist supposed to change it to the correct form? What if they say something like “I seen”? *cringe*

      Generally, the reporter writes exactly what is said. We do not “fix” bad grammar. And you are right — “I seen” is tough!
